Christchurch-based lawyer John Shingleton hopes he is changing the face of legal services in the country with the launch of what is believed to be its first cloud-based law firm.

Online Lawyers NZ is not an extension of an existing firm, but is completely cloud-based, which according to Mr Shingleton avoids the ‘behind-the-scenes costs of a traditional law firm.’ He and a team of specialist lawyers will cover areas including employment, M&A and shareholding issues.

Fixed pricing

Mr Shingleton believes that the firm’s fixed pricing will be attractive to clients who want a more affordable option: ‘At the moment many people have no idea what they will be charged, after they have engaged a lawyer. The market has been surprisingly tolerant for a long time but the tide is turning. The way we are working will mean that quality legal services will be more affordable, particularly for small to medium sized businesses, which are regularly charged at the same rate as large organisations.’

Information for free

It also intends to share a substantial amount of free, general information about legal issues. ‘When you go to your doctor, they’ll send you to authoritative websites to find out more about your condition. We’ll offer the same type of free information on legal issues and then back it up with individualised advice if it’s required,’ he commented.

Handy in remote locations

Mr Shingleton added that the advantages of being able to do almost everything online are especially great for people working in remote locations or cities like Auckland, where ‘you might have to travel long distances to see someone.’
