Samsung's 'surprise' patent win stings Apple

South Korean technology giant Samsung has claimed a surprise victory in its patent war with Apple which may see products made by the Californian company banned from sale in the US.

Samsung: patent war rages on

According to a report in the Guardian, the International Trade Commission ruling could affect sales of the iPhone 4 and the 3G-capable iPad 2. However, Apple has claimed the decision will have ‘no impact’ on the availability of its products.

Appeal

The ruling concerned a patent which is deemed essential to conform to 3G standards – which Samsung has pledged to license freely. Apple has confirmed it will appeal the decision.
The ruling came just hours after US President Barack Obama pledged to address the country’s patent litigation system, with reform of the ITC said to be a top priority.
