Shanghai eases way for foreign law firms in free trade zone

A mutual accreditation system is to be set up in the Shanghai free trade zone (FTZ) to allow local and foreign lawyers to co-operate with each other on international cases.

The Chinese authorities are expected to use the model of  'closer economic partnership arrangement' which has operated with law firms based in Hong Kong and Macau and which were allowed to co-operate with mainland Chinese lawyers.

Foreign legal affairs advisers

Under the proposed system, foreing law firms would be able to send their lawyers to Chinese law firms to act as 'foreign legal affairs advisers'. The Chinese firms would also be able to send lawyers to the foreign firms. The lawyers could decided between them how the work was divided up between them. Some western firms have been watching out for this development, seeing it as a crucial milestone in the opening up of the Chinese legal market. Source: ECNS.com
