US employment rate rises for law grads for first time since 2007

The employment rate for 2014 has risen to 86.7 - up over 2% points on last year, partly thanks to a smaller number of students reading the law.

65 per cent of respondents believe a certification programme would be valuable for new associates

The absolute number of jobs held by law graduates actually fell by about 3,000 between 2013 and 2014 - but, because the number of law graduates shrank by a larger amount, the proportion of them in work went up, according to the National Association for Law Placement(NALP). In 2013 the employment rate was 84.5%.

Prospects to 2018

NALP's executive director, James Leipold, said: 'These data present a picture of a complex employment market, and it is virtually impossible to tease apart the twin forces of a shrinking class and an overall job market that continues to improve (albeit modestly), but it is clear that the shrinking class size did indeed have a positive impact on the overall employment rate, and that is a dynamic that will likely continue to be in play for the next three graduating classes, each of which is projected to continue to come down in size in fairly dramatic steps.'
