VW to be sued by West Virginia

West Virginia looks set to become the first US state to sue Volkswagen AG for deceiving car buyers, after the company installed software to hide that its diesel engines exceeded pollution standards.

Patrick Morissey, Attorney General of West Virginia, is seeking restitution for VW customers. He claims they paid as much as US$6,855 extra for cars with the clean diesel engines, as well as US$5,000 in civil penalties per violation of West Virginia’s consumer protection law.

Criminal investigation

Volkswagen faces a criminal investigation by the US Justice Department and a joint investigation by at least 45 states under environmental and consumer-protection laws. More than 229 lawsuits have also been filed as class actions in federal courts in at least 37 states, with claims amounting to billions of dollars. Source: Bloomberg Business
