Law firms will have to accept that it's a buyers market going forward, a US academic says. Too many lawyers are competing for business whilst self-help legal services are becoming ever more sophisticated, Jim Jones, a lawyer and senior fellow at the Centre for the Study of the Legal Profession at Georgetown University Law Centre told the State Bar of Navada. He also pointed out that law firms were no longer gatekeepers of legal knowledge.  'We're not going to be able to make money by controlling access to information,' he said.  Meanwhile clients were increasingly disposed to hiring non-premium law firms for non-critical matters whilst still happy to pay top dollar for critical matters. Legal departments were also doing more corporate work in-house than before, he said.
