Mayer Brown affiliate opens in Brasília with ex-AG hire

Mayer Brown's Brazilian arm has opened a new office in the country's capital and hired a former attorney general and confidant of ousted president Dilma Rousseff as a partner in its litigation and compliance practice.

Luis Inacio Adams, 51, who stepped down as attorney general at the end of February, will lead Tauil & Chequer Advogados' new Brasília office and will focus on cases in the Superior Court of Justice and Supreme Court.

Government experience

According to Tauil & Chequer, Mr Adams’ experience in government includes periods serving as National Treasury attorney, deputy general counsel for litigation in the attorney general's office and general counsel of the Ministry of Finance. The firm intends to combine his experience with its global reach through its Mayer Brown association to provide clients with a platform of national and international litigation services.

‘Consolidates our position’

‘Luis Adams is a highly distinguished and experienced lawyer, and his arrival is a significant move for our firm, reflecting our continued growth in Brazil,’ Alexandre Chequer, the partner in charge of Tauil & Chequer Advogados, said in a statement. ‘We are constantly expanding, and this new addition, together with the opening of our new office in Brasília, consolidates our position as one of the most reputable law firms in Brazil.’

The firm lost 10 attorneys to DLA Piper affiliate Campos Mellos Avdogados' Rio de Janeiro office last month, a year after a handful of Campos Mellos tax attorneys moved to Tauil & Chequer.
