Lawyers from New York-based firm Hughes Hubbard filed two trademark applications on behalf of President Trump on 18 January, two days before he took office, locking in the new president’s slogan for his 2020 re-election campaign. During an interview with The Washington Post days earlier, Mr Trump was asked about the origins of his ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan for the 2016 campaign, and his plans for 2020. Mr Trump then interrupted the interview to summon a lawyer into his office. ‘Will you trademark and register, if you would, if you like it—I think I like it, right? Do this: 'Keep America Great,' with an exclamation point. With and without an exclamation,' he reportedly said. His lawyers’ subsequent applications to the Patent and Trademark Office cover use of the slogans on a range of paraphernalia including hats, baby outfits and campaign pamphlets.
