Baker McKenzie has promoted 84 of its lawyers to its partnership across 35 offices — the largest partnership round since 2016’s tally of 85.

The promotions are a significant jump from 2018’s round of 67 promotions with the gender balance nudging upwards — 41% of the new partners are women, compared to just under 40% in 2019.

Regionally, the US and Europe each recorded 26 promotions, with 19 partners made up in Asia and Australasia and 10 in Latin America.

There were eight promotions apiece in Chicago, London and Washington DC and a bumper five lawyers made up in Mexico City, up from three last year.

Four partners were made up in Dallas, Tokyo, Bangkok and Sao Paulo, where Bakers has a cooperation agreement with Brazilian firm Trench Rossi Watanabe.

In continental Europe, there were three promotions each in Germany, The Netherlands and Italy.

In terms of practice areas, the number of tax specialists making partner nearly doubled from 13 last year to 23, making it the most fertile discipline for promotions after dispute resolution (15) and mergers & acquisitions (13).

Seven IP and technology specialist were promoted to the partnership with employment and compensation accounting for six new partners.

Promotions in The Americas took effect on 1 January with the remainder going live on 1 July.

Earlier this month, the firm announced a raft of leadership changes across its Asia Pacific practice and industry groups with seven out of 19 regional posts changing hands.

This announcement came hard on the heels of a shake-up of its global practice and sector group heads.
