Mr Ballheimer will step up in May to replace incumbent managing partner Wim Dejonghe, who was elected as Allen & Overy's new senior partner last week. Mr Ballheimer began his legal career as an associate at Allan & Overy in 1987, making partner in 1994 and working in the firm's Tokyo and New York offices before returning to the London base in 2003. He will now serve as managing partner for an initial four-year term until 2020.
Mr Ballheimer edged three other candidates to take out the managing partner role. Banking co-head Andrew Trahair, banking partner Michael Castle and Tokyo-based project finance partner Simon Black were also in the running for the post. The domino-like reshuffle of A&O's leadership team was catalysed by the news that current senior partner David Morley will retire from the firm in April after two terms. Mr Morley has congratulated both Mr Dejonghe Mr Ballheimer on their new roles and expressed his confidence that A&O 'will continue to thrive under their leadership.'
