Allen & Overy has announced that Phillip Bowden and Andrew Thomas will become the firm's new global co-heads of banking at the end of April, when current co-heads Mr Kensell and Mr Trahair are due to step down. It is understood that neither Mr Kensell nor Mr Trahair was interested in throwing in their hat for a third term at the helm, opting instead to return to full-time practice at the firm.
London-based Mr Bowden joined Allen & Overy in 1999 and served as a partner in the banking practice until becoming global co-head of leveraged finance practice in 2014. Mr Thomas, who is based in the Netherlands, joined the firm in 2001 and became managing partner of the A&O office in Amsterdam in 2009.
The appointments are the latest in a suite of high-profile leadership changes at Allen & Overy in recent months. In February, former global co-head of corporate Andrew Ballheimer beat a group of competitors that included Mr Trahair to be elected as the firm's new managing partner. Meanwhile, Mr Kensell was in the running for Allen & Overy's senior partner post, which eventually saw Wim Dejonghe elected to replace David Morley. Just last week, the firm filled Mr Ballheimer's former post as global co-head of corporate with London corporate head Richard Browne, who will work alongside fellow co-head Dirk Meeus.
