Blank Rome has hired a four-lawyer commodities and finance team in New York from Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, in a move the firm said boosted its offering to clients in the energy and energy transition sectors.

Partner Christopher Doyle has joined the Philadelphia-based firm's corporate, M&A and securities group, while partner Marvin Goldstein has joined the finance, restructuring and bankruptcy practice alongside two senior counsel.

Grant Palmer, Blank Rome’s chair and managing partner, said the team “bring deep experience across commodity trading, derivatives, M&A and structured finance. Their addition reflects our commitment to strategic growth and to providing clients with the sophisticated counsel they need in an increasingly complex business environment.”

The team's departure from Hogan Lovells Cadwalader comes just months after the $3.9bn merger that created the firm went live in July. It follows the defection of an 11-lawyer fund finance team to Sidley Austin in New York in August, while another fund finance team, this time comprising 10 lawyers, decamped from legacy Cadwalader for Sidley in February.

The Blank Rome team had spent more than two years with legacy Hogan Lovells, having previously worked at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan.

Collectively, they represent commodity merchants, traders and the institutions that finance them in transactions ranging from large-scale borrowing base revolvers and structured financings to deals involving renewable energy, carbon capture and environmental credits and allowances. They also advise on the securitisation of mortgage, consumer and trade receivables and other structured finance transactions.

Peter Schnur, partner and co-chair of Blank Rome's corporate, M&A and securities group, said the team “enables us to provide clients with a broader range of services while deepening our capabilities in areas of growing demand, including energy transition and environmental markets”.

The 800-lawyer firm grew gross revenue 14.7% in 2025 to just over $852m and pushed profit per equity partner past $2m for the first time off the back of organic growth, rate increases and improved realisation.

So far this year, the firm has hired partners across practices including business litigation, infrastructure and project finance and hospitality. In May, it added restructuring partner Buffey Klein to its finance, restructuring and bankruptcy practice in Dallas from Husch Blackwell, while in February it recruited the former longtime head of K&L Gates' corporate practice, Robert Zinn, as a partner in Pittsburgh alongside partner Megan Wotherspoon.

A Hogan Lovells Cadwalader spokesperson commented: “We would like to thank Chris and Marvin for their contributions to the firm and wish them well in their careers.”

Dechert recently strengthened its commodities practice by hiring Carl Kennedy as a partner and head of its commodities and derivatives team in New York. Kennedy joined the firm from Katten Muchin Rosenman, where he co-chaired the financial markets and regulation practice.
