Commenting on the 20 per cent rise, the SRA said nearly half of the cases involved the identity theft of an individual lawyer or law firm. In a case study of a City law firm, the SRA showed how some fraudsters copied several web pages of a large practice, changed the names of some of the partners and then sent out emails asking for upfront payments in relation to inheritances coming from unknown relatives.
