The message from Lawyers for Britain is clear: ‘We believe that there needs to be a fundamental change in Britain’s relationship with the EU. This cannot be achieved unless we vote to leave the current Treaties, and then build a new and constructive relationship which preserves our trading links but restores our ability to be governed by our own laws.’
Among the reasons given for this stance are the complexity of the EU law-making process, its slow reform process and the damage done to UK democracy by EU supremacy. According to the group, Britain's exit from the UK is legally straightforward and can be achieved in four steps.
Lawyers for Britain is led by Martin Howe QC, barrister at intellectual property set 8 New Square, whose practice encompasses EU law. Founding committee members include CMS Cameron McKenna associate Victoria Hewson and Slaughter and May lawyer Eric Phillips, though neither firm has officially come out on favour of Brexit or Bremain.
Their campaign directly opposes the pro-Bremain position adopted by fellow lawyer-led campaign groups Lawyers Against Brexit and National Voter Registration Drive.
