He will be taking over from incumbent regional managing partner Peter Charlton, who is heading back to the United Kingdom after an eight-year tenure in the position. Mr Hughes, who is currently head of the firm's Asia Pacific energy and resources group, will relocate from Singapore to Hong Kong in June and will take up the regional leadership role from September this year.
Clifford Chance has seen considerable expansion in the Asia Pacific region under Mr Hughes leadership. Its regional lawyer headcount has lifted 70 per cent to more than 450, while partner numbers have grown from 30 to 44 in the last ten years. According to the firm, regional revenues have also more than doubled during Mr Hughes tenure.
Clifford Chance global managing partner Matthew Layton congratulated Mr Hughes on his new position in a statement released this week:
