Clyde & Co launched in Tripoli four years ago following the downfall of leader Muammar Gaddafi, becoming the first international law firm to establish a presence in Libya in more than four decades. The decision to discretely close down the office in April was reportedly prompted by concerns for the safety of the firm’s staff in Libya, which has suffered through a period of ongoing political instability and violent turbulence that culminated in an attempted military coup in Tripoli earlier this month. A spokesperson from Clyde & Co confirmed that all Libyan operations have been moved offshore ‘for the time being’. The firm will continue to service Libyan clients from its offices in the Middle East and London.
