The Supreme Court decision did not refer directly to the ongoing investigation of Justice Seamus P McCaffery - but 'was clearly directed' at him and his lawyer wife and judicial adviser, Lise Rapaport, according to Philly.com. Eight law firms have recently received subpoenas in relation to referral fees they have been paying to Ms Rapaport. According to the website, Ms Rapaport received US$821,000 last year for one referral. Federal prosecutors and the FBI are investigating the referrals and what effect they may have had on the judge's actions.
Entirely proper
Neither the judge nor his wife nor their lawyer Dion G Rassias were available for comment. However, Mr Rassias has maintained that Ms Rapaport was not practising the law when she made the referrals. He also says that her referrals and the fees paid in relation to them were entirely proper.
