Controversial judges law takes effect in Turkey

The Turkish president has signed and given effect to the controversial law which increases government control over the judiciary.

President Abdullah Gul signed the law, making only a few changes which could have created problems for the law from a constitutional point of view. The law gives much greater control to the central government over the workings of the independent body which appoints senior judges. Both the EU and Human Rights Watch have made clear their concerns about the law. Source: London South East
