The first libel case involving Twitter in the US courts could set a social media precedent for defamation. The lawsuit involves actress and musician Courtney Love who is the first celebrity in the US to be subject to a trial over an allegedly defamatory social media message. The celebrity was accused of defaming her former lawyer in a tweet in 2010. The celebrity was angry that her lawyer would not represent her in a case against those managing her late husband Kurt Cobain’s estate and alleged in the tweet that the lawyer had been ‘bought off.'  Ms Love  argued that the tweet should be read in the context of the internet as her opinion and that hasty, opinionated language on twitter should be interpreted differently than being used in a more formal setting but a judge decided to go to jury trial. Judge Michael Johnson also rejected arguements that Ms Love did not identify the law firm. Source: TheDrum.com
