Covington consolidates position as Washington DC's largest law firm

Covington & Burling has emerged as Washington DC's largest firm for the second year running, coming top in a market that is increasingly favouring the biggest firms and leaving less room for competition from the next tier down.

Covington & Burling lists 158 partners in the Washington DC office, including Eric H Holder Jr, the partner who left Covington to become Attorney General in 2009 and who returned this year when he stood down from the office.

Unable to grow

The National Law Journal comments that the US capital's legal market has become 'increasingly concentrated around the premium, largest law firms as mid-tier offices get bogged down, unable to grow or assert themselves in the competitive capital city'. Other research has shown that Washington DC is the most populous US city in terms of lawyers, with one in 12 residents having the legal qualification. Source: National Law Journal
