Family law practitioners are expecting the traditional January surge of couples looking to divorce. According to law firm Irwin Mitchell, instructions are typically up 25 per cent in January as many couples do not survive the Christmas holidays. Divorce lawyer Alison Hawes said that financial pressures would also feature at this time of the year, with 40 per cent of parents admitting financial difficulties were causing strain in their relationship.
Careful timing
Research from Co-op Legal Services suggests that Christmas is rarely if ever the direct cause of break-ups; a quarter of those surveyed said that they had already planned to separate, but that they had timed taking the first steps until after the festivties. Source: Irwin Mitchell
