Danish AI legal research start-up Pandektes has raised €13.5m in a Series A funding round.
The investment round was led by early-stage venture capital fund Alstin Capital, alongside contributions from investment firms PROfounders and Scale Capital and existing investors People Ventures and Interface Capital. Its overall funding total has now reached €17.5m.
The company said it will use the funding to further expand its platform and geographic reach.
Pandektes is an AI-powered legal research tool that helps lawyers find the correct laws, court cases and legal answers swiftly. Its capabilities include analysing legal issues connecting previous court decisions and legal documents, while also helping to draft, check documents and reviews contracts.
CEO and co-founder Casper Laursen said: “Replacing legacy research platforms is an important part of what we are building, but it is not the destination.
“An AI system for lawyers is only as good as the information underneath it. If the data is incomplete, outdated, poorly structured or disconnected from its original source, a better interface or a more capable model will not solve the problem.
“We believe the next generation of legal technology therefore needs a new data layer beneath it: legal information structured consistently across jurisdictions, continuously updated, connected to its original sources and built from the ground up for AI agents and other machine systems.”
Pandektes says that more than 500 law firms, companies across various industries and public institutions use its platform, adding that around two-thirds of organisations become clients following a testing stage of the legal research tool’s capabilities.
In February last year, the company secured €2.9m in a seed funding round that was led by technology investors People Ventures and Interface Capital.
It said the financing would enable the company to advance its mission to revolutionise legal research across Europe, not just in Denmark.
The Copenhagen-headquartered start-up, which has two other offices in London and Hamburg, was founded three years ago by CEO Laursen and CTO Søren Brokær.
Prior to co-establishing Pandektes, Laursen was area sales manager of machinery manufacturing business ProTruck for almost two-and-a-half years.
Brokær previously had a three-year spell at human resources services company Peakon, where latterly he was a senior software engineer.
Other legaltech companies have also been raising funds in recent months. In September, Israeli-founded AI contract review start-up Chamelio secured $26m in a Series A funding round.
The company said it will use the capital to develop its proprietary legal action model, along with growing its legal engineering and product teams, with additional funds placed towards onboarding technology.
This was followed by German legal AI platform Noxtua securing more than €100m after closing its Series C funding round.
The funding round saw C.H. Beck – one of the oldest publishing houses in Germany – become the company’s new majority shareholder, after law firms CMS and Dentons both sold their stakes in the company.
