Deloitte announced this week that it will launch a new legal business in Canada following its acquisition of established Toronto-based firm Conduit Law. The new legal services offering, to be called Deloitte Conduit Law LLP, will provide outsourced assistance to in-house legal departments, meet business needs on demand at law firms, and deliver short term projects and special engagements.

'This strategic affiliation is mindful of the future direction of law,' commented Deloitte corporate development officer Alexandre Baril, adding that the accounting group's aim was to its capabilities in ways that 'keep pace with the unique changes in the Canadian market.' Conduit Law president and founder Peter Carayiannis is also confident that the partnership will help both parties to better meet the evolving needs of clients. 'Affiliating with Deloitte to form Deloitte Conduit Law LLP means quite simply that we can offer our clients more. We're not a start-up anymore, this is an exiting time,' he said.

Deloitte's 'big four' accounting contemporaries—EY, PwC and KPMG—have all pursued alternative business structures in the UK legal department. Despite the latest development in Canada, Deloitte insists it has no plans to follow suit across the Atlantic. Sources: Law Society Gazette; Market Wired
