Images of noble partners leading teams of associates on all night marathons pouring over the small print on the latest leveraged buy-out deal are the stuff of Homeric myth in the legal profession. There is only one reason that some global law firms lay on gymnasiums, swimming pools and up-market canteens at their premises – they don’t want the worker bees to leave the office.
Indeed, at least one City of London firm was reported several years ago to have installed sleeping pods in its building, allowing its hard-pressed lawyers to catch a few winks in spaceship style discomfort before hitting the files again. But if they are still working too many hours, most of our surveyed partners don’t want to admit it.
