As in-house lawyers flex their muscles – emboldened by increased respect and responsibility gained over recent years, and, not least, the budgetary power they hold over external law firms – there is increasing talk that they should aim high and look for a place at their companies’ top tables. But the reality is, according to our survey of leading global GCs, that for whatever reason – complacency, fear, laziness – nearly half responded by saying ‘No, thanks.’ As the Association of Corporate Counsel gears up for its annual Europe meeting, it will be interesting to see whether this broad reluctance is explained.
