Egypt rejects Amal Clooney's threat claim

The Egyptian authorities have responded with indignation to statements from UK-based human rights lawyer Amal Clooney that she was threatening with arrest for criticising the Egyptian justice system.

The author of a report last year on the independence of the Egyptian justice system, Ms Clooney said she had been told by an official that she could be arrested if she returned to the country. But an Interior Ministry spokesman, Hani Abdel Latif, said: 'We have nothing against her. She should say exactly who said that. Why not specify from the start who told her that?'

Launch of report

She recently said: 'When I went to launch the report, first of all they stopped us from doing it in Cairo. They said: 'Does the report criticise the army, the judiciary, or the government?' We said: 'Well, yes.' They said: 'Well then, you're risking arrest'.' Source: New York Daily News
