According to the Financial Times, the EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht has adoped a ‘wait and see’ approach to the case depending on whether European companies are awarded roles in the China Telecom project which will account for as much as half of global telecoms investment next year.
The trade case revolved around alleged illegal subsidies to telecom network equipment manufacturers. The commissioner had threatened to launch the investigation on his own initiative and not dependent on a complaint by a European company as is usually the case.
