Three men were arrested by the police within an hour of the attack in Ohio. Mr Chesley, now 79, and his wife went through his private wood to a neighbour's house and rang the police after the robbers left their property. He had at one stage been pushed down some stairs.

Mr Chesley became famous when, in 1977, he sued the eletrical wire industry as a way of seeking damages for the 165 people killed in the Beverley Hills Supper Club fire. The tactic was both new and successful, and he won $49m for the victims' families.
