Ford GC warns against diluting law firm brands through expansion plans

David Leitch, general counsel of Ford, says that he seeks 'expertise' and 'value' when appointing law firms, rather than specifically seeking practices of a particular size and scope - and he warns against the dilution of quality as firms expand.

Taking the example of why Ford uses the 400-lawyer Midwestern US law firm Snell & Wilmer, Mr Leitch said that legal team uses them 'because we have a long relationship with them, and their lawyers provide great value for us, and deliver really excellent service'.

Question

But, considering how the situation might change if such a firm became larger, Mr Leitch continued: 'Now, I guess if they had decided they wanted to become a national firm, the question then would be for us, “Can we still get the same service that we want? Or does this somehow dilute their brand?”.' Source: Forbes
