Former Stikeman Elliott lawyer appointed to Canadian cabinet

Melanie Joly, a 36-year old litigation specialist, has been appointed to the small cabinet of new Premier Justin Trudeau as heritage minister.

She also studied at the University of Oxford as a Chevening scholar and used to work for Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg. Within litigation, she has specialised in bankruptcy and insolvency law.

Public relations

As well as for her legal career, Ms Joly is known for her work in public relations. She became managing partner of Chon & Wolfe Montreal and was head of the Quebec Advisory Committee for the leadership campaign of Justin Trudeau, whose Liberal Party won the general election in Canada last month.
