GCs struggle to understand the extent of data in their businesses

According to Voya Financial, lawyers in large financial organisations have particular issues protecting data that is held, as legal teams often have no idea that certain kinds of information exist.

Speaking at the annual Association of Corporate Counsel meeting in Boston, Rachel Reid, chief privacy officer at Voya Financial, said: 'They didn’t know that it was even out there, or what information was on it. Not knowing what data you have just compounds the difficulty of these issues.'

She also implied that lawyers need to be a little sceptical about some of the apparently easy solutions that are offered to them. With regard to data mapping, she said: 'Ask yourself how confident you are in its accuracy.' Source: Bloomberg Business of Law
