Canadian law firm Gowling Lafleur Henderson is launching a Cuba initiative aimed at advising potential investors interested in doing business on the island. The firm is making the move as relations between Cuba and the US enter into a new phase. Whilst foreign firms are not permitted to practise law in Cuba, Gowling will operate under the banner Gowlings Consulting Inc and will partner with a local law firm.

The Cuban project will be headed up by Gowling partners Paul Fornazzari and Stuart Olley and Havana-based Canadian lawyer, Gregory Biniowsky, who previously worked with Heenan Blaikie.Conservative fundraiser Ralph Lean, who had been working with clients interested in Cuba while he was at his previous firms, Cassels Brock & Blackwell and Heenan Blaikie, will be involved.
