The UAE's Al Tamimi & Company has extended its 'talent nurturing' programme by launching a 'leadership academy' in a bid to promote home-grown talent in a region dominated by western lawyers and executives.

The firm – which claims to be the largest in the Middle East – maintains that legal practices in the region must ‘attract, retain and develop’ staff who are not only experts in their fields, but have the leadership skills to advance a firm as a whole.
Managing Partner, Husam Hourani said the academy – which follows in the wake of the firm’s two-year-old centre of development -- will ‘help us develop the existing talent we have in the firm. Our people are what drives the success of the firm and in today’s competitive environment, it’s imperative that we do all we can to develop our employees to ensure we not only retain them but that we also prepare them for the next step in their career development’.
Launching next week, the academy features a range of developmental programmes, with a highlight for local lawyers being the fast track Emirati trainee lawyer scheme, which, the firm maintains, demonstrates its commitment to the advancement of lawyers in the area.
The ‘Emiratisation’ of law firms and corporations in the region is a highly contentious issue. The indigenous Emirati population is estimated to account for less than a fifth of the emirate’s total population, with locals featuring infrequently in senior law firm roles.
