Global law firms took a scythe to their lawyer numbers during the great economic, financial, banking (add modifier to suit taste) crisis of 2008-09. And, while the UK and US firms were most brutal, whispers abounded that several big continental European practices also invoked euphemistic ‘restructuring’ or ‘repositioning’ programmes. Regardless of the name attached, the process involved sacking lawyers; so are firms over the hump and back into the recruitment market? Or does the economic wind – not least emanating from the eurozone – still carry a whiff of fear? Our survey of firms is encouraging, although one wonders about the 10 per cent that don’t seem to have a clue about their recruitment policies.
