Hong Kong lawyers explore virtual offices

The 9,000 lawyers who are members of the Hong Kong Law Society may be given permission to work on-line rather than from physical offices.

Stephen Hung Wanshun, the society’s president, has announced a working group to look into the issue. He wrote recently: ‘The new generation of lawyers, as well as clients, who seem to have the internet hardwired in their DNA, appear keen to work online.’ 

High rents

Sebastian Ko of Debevoise & Plimpton said: ‘Many lawyers I know believe that greater reliance on technology in legal practice could help make lawyers and clients more efficient, and could benefit clients' access to legal services.’ Costs could also fall for clients as rents are known to be expensive in Hong Kong.
