Top Irish law firm Matheson has named a new managing partner following incumbent Darren Maher's resignation.
Matheson's partnership elected head of tax, Shane Hogan, as managing partner, the firm announced. Hogan joined the firm in 2000 as a trainee and has built one of the top tax practices in the Irish market covering advisory, transactional and disputes work for blue-chip clients including Smurfit Westrock and Pernod Ricard SA.
Matheson declined to comment on Maher's resignation. GLP understands Maher, himself a veteran of Matheson of more than 20 years, stepped down for personal reasons having taken over as managing partner at the start of this year from long-time leader Michael Jackson. He is currently working as a self-employed lawyer in Dublin, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Paddy Spicer, Matheson's chairperson, congratulated Hogan on his appointment, adding that "throughout his career Shane has built trusted relationships across the firm and with clients, while helping to drive growth and innovation.

For his part Maher co-headed Matheson's corporate department and led its financial institutions group for a number of years before taking the helm in January following Jackson's decade as managing partner, during which Matheson grew into a firm of more than 900 professionals across six locations in Ireland, the UK and US.
The firm has counselled the majority of the Fortune 100 and regularly advises on the Irish law aspects of major domestic and cross-border corporate deals, including Energy Capital Partners on its $7.7bn acquisition of Irish energy distributor DCC Energy alongside KKR last month.
Hogan commented; “Having started in Matheson as a trainee, it is a particular privilege to be appointed managing partner.
