A decade ago a Western lawyer, when asked about India or the Philippines, would have had a response that depended on whether he’d been to either country on holiday or had been a keen fan of Paul Scott’s Raj Quartet. Today, lawyers have strong views – they either feel aided by those jurisdictions or profoundly threatened by them. The reason is what was originally legal process outsourcing, and what is becoming legal services outsourcing. The shifting of certain low-grade legal work from the developed to the developing world is likely to have profound implications for the traditional structures of Western law firms. And a significant majority of partners in our survey see the phenomenon continuing.
