Lawyers may twitch at the suggestion that some of what they do can be packaged up like tins of peas – and far more cost effectively to boot (although years ago, a prominent English QC never missed the opportunity to tell the story of his first job in a pea packing factory). But there appears to be an inexorable move towards the commoditisation of some aspects of ‘low grade’ legal work and farming it out to cheaper service providers. As that would have been the type of work on which young lawyers historically cut their teeth, how will this trend affect traditional law firm structures? Our survey suggests that private practice lawyers are divided.
