The executive board of 1,300-lawyer Squire Sanders approved the deal on Friday and the proposal is expected to be put to the partners this week. If both partner groups agreed, the aim is to create the new firm, which looks likely to be called Squire Patton Boggs, on 1 June. It would become the 23rd largest law practice in the US.

Patton Boggs revenue fell 12% in 2012/13. It now has about 400 lawyers. Parts of its problems have been due to its involvement in the Ecuadorean villagers litigation against Chevron. The lead partner on that client, James Tyrrell, would not be allowed to join the new firm, according to sources who spoke to Reuters. Source: Reuters
