Tony O’Malley will leave the role immediately, and will retire from the partnership on 31 December, reports The Australian.
Mr O'Malley has been with the firm for 13 years, but said he would not stay on in another capacity when he leaves the partnership.
Management changes
His appointment as a managing partner last year followed the merger of Australia's Mallesons Stephen Jaques and China's King & Wood which sparked a surge of management changes, including the relocation of Mr O'Malley's predecessor, Stuart Fuller, who moved to Hong Kong to become global managing partner of the merged firm.
A spokeswoman for the firm said the decision has been a mutual one taken by Mr O'Malley and the board.
