Large law firms move to back same-sex marriage

At least 30 of the top 200 US law firms have been involved in proceedings to challenge state bans on same-sex marriage - while none has been involved in defending such a ban, according to research from Reuters.

One lawyer, Gene Schaerr, even left his firm, Winston Strawn, where he had been a partner, in order to act on behalf of his home state, Utah, in defending its ban. Same-sex marriage is now legal in 19 of the 50 US states. Many large law firms have worked on a pro bono basis for supporters of same-sex marriage. Akin Gump says it has given 1,100 hours so far to the cause, as regards actions in Texas, Utah, Oklahoma and Virginia. Source: Business Insider
