Law Society sets unenforceable minimum wage for trainees

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has set a minimum wage for trainees of £20,276 in London and £18,183 elsewhere - but the figures are recommendations only.

The figures were 8.3 per cent lower last year in London (£18,590) and 8.4 per cent lower outside the capital (£16,650). But those figures were compulsory minimums.

The Junior Lawyers' Division is encouraging law firms to follow the guideline salaries this year. Chair Max Harris said: 'By adhering to at least the ... recommended minimum salary, firms will encourage better access.' He said that social mobility would be improved by paying these sums.
