Though young, Ms Spurrier has already enjoyed an illustrious legal career with stints as in-house counsel at Mind and the Public Law Project and as a judicial assistant to the vice-president of the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal, Lord Justice Maurice Kay. As a barrister, Ms Spurrier specialises in access to justice issues, as well as the rights of women, children and disabled people.
Ms Spurrier is not the first barrister from the trendy Doughty Street Chambers set to achieve widespread public recognition or even fame during their time with the chambers. World renowned human rights lawyer Amal Clooney is a colleague of Ms Spurrier's at Doughty Street, and incidentally was called to the bar in the same year. Instagram celebrity barrister Tunde Okewale is also with the set.
Ms Spurrier will replace outgoing Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, who stepped down in January after 12 years at the helm.
