Middle-aged London lawyers jump ship to US firms over lay-off fears

Experienced lawyers in their 40s and 50s are abandoning UK practices for US rivals because they fear they will be forced to retire early to clear the decks for younger lawyers, according to consultants Jomati.

Elite UK law firms are losing market share to their US rivals

Jomati's research - based on interviews with 50 partners in top law firms - concludes that the native firms need to get better at handling partner retirement if they want to stem the flow of high-quality lawyers. 

Poor history

Jomati discovered that many partners had decided to go even before the subject of retirement had been raised. The consultants also believe that the UK firms have a poor history of handling the retirement issue. Source: FT
