Industry publication Legal Week recently surveyed around 150 partners from law firms across the UK and found that 57 per cent believe that UK firms will lay off lawyers in the coming year. Of the total survey sample, 11 per cent said that they thought cuts to lawyer headcounts were ‘extremely likely’, while only 5 per cent of respondents said that such cuts were ‘extremely unlikely’. For business services positions, the outlook seems even gloomier – an overwhelming 83 per cent of respondents said they expected to see business services positions cut at UK law firms over the next six months. More than one in three respondents predicted that business service staff cuts would happen at their own firms in the same period.
