Pollution PI lawyer wins Asia's Nobel Prize

Wang Canfa, founder and director of the Beijing-based Center for Legal Assistance to Pollution Victims, has been awarded the Ramon Magsysay Award, seen as Asia's Nobel equivalent.

Cited for giving legal aid to victims of pollution, he won the award jointly with investigative journalist Hu Shull. Wang Canfa set up the Center in 1998. As well as participating in the drafting of many Chinese environmental laws and training a network of environmental specialists in China, he and his center (the first to tackle pollution and human rights in China) have handled over 10,000 telephone enquiries and dealt with over 100 cases.
