Mr Ray had been driving the quad-bike at his hobby farm in Merrijig, outside of Melbourne, on Sunday when the accident occurred. A former president of the Law Council of Australia and Chair of the Victorian Bar, Mr Ray was a widely respected barrister who appeared before several Royal Commissions and worked as a prosecutor for WorkSafe Victoria in its high-profile case against Essendon Football Club’s supplements program. Mr Ray’s death is one of a growing number of fatalities associated with quad-bike use, with accidents relating to quad-bike or all-terrain vehicles accounting for nearly 40 per cent of Australian farm accident deaths last year.
