Speaking on MSNBC last week, US Solicitor General Donald Verrilli appeared confident that Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim people entering the United States would ‘probably’ never appear before the Supreme Court. However, Mr Verrilli added that such a ban would be very unlikely to weather SCOTUS scrutiny should the proposal ever make it to the nation’s highest court. ‘I can’t imagine that the court would find a religious test like that appropriate,’ he said, citing the US Constitution’s prohibition on any ‘religious test’ for government service positions as a point of comparison. Mr Verrilli’s comments came as the White House’s top lawyer prepares to step down next week from the Solicitor General post after five years of service.
