Mr Carvalho emerged victorious on Monday over corporate head Iain Newman and disputes head Jonathan Warne, who had also thrown their hats in for the top job. Elections were called at Nabarro when incumbent senior partner Graham Stedman announced that he will retire at the end of April. This was Mr Carvalho’s second play for the helm, having lost out to Mr Stedman in the 2013 senior partner election. He will assume the role from 1 May.
Since joining Nabarro in 2009, Mr Carvalho has brought in a suite of high-profile clients to the firm including Lendlease, Union&Civic, Angelo Gordon, Union Investment and Employees Provident Fund of Malaysia. He will now be responsible for executing Nabarro’s three-year strategy, announced in June, which aims to boost revenue from international clients to a third of turnover by 2018. The firm will also condense its focus into four key sectors: healthcare & life sciences, infrastructure, real estate and technology.
