Simpson Thacher worked on a total of 26 deals in the first quarter, accounting for around 13 per cent of the global M&A market. The firm also came in first place in the US M&A rankings, overseeing 17 deals with a combined value of $59bn over the quarter. For European deals, US firm Davis Polk & Wardwell claimed the biggest slice of the M&A pie with $59bn worth of deals.
Most notable among Simpson Thacher's deals for the last quarter are China National Chemical Corp's $43bn play for Swiss seeds and pesticides company Syngenta and the planned $16.5bn merger of industrial company Johnson Controls with security provider Tyco.
Also appearing in the global top ten for Q1 were Davis Polk & Wardwell with $77bn worth of deals, Jones Day with $57bn and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer with $49bn.
